SmartThings says a new IKEA range of Matter-over-Thread devices will work natively with its platform, bringing 21 products into one system for lighting, environmental monitoring and everyday alerts. The announcement was made at CES 2026 and gives compatible households another way to combine IKEA hardware with SmartThings routines.
Twenty-one IKEA devices in one SmartThings setup
The launch lineup includes bulbs, switches, plugs and sensors. SmartThings says the devices can be brought into the same app and automation system instead of being managed as separate IKEA products. That integration depends on the hub already installed in the home. Matter-over-Thread hubs are built into certain Samsung TVs, Family Hub refrigerators, soundbars and other Samsung devices. Owners of compatible Samsung hardware may therefore have a control point ready for the IKEA devices, although the relevant equipment still needs to support Matter-over-Thread.
Two sensors turn household conditions into routines
SmartThings highlights the TIMMERFLOTTE temperature and humidity sensor and the ALPSTUGA air-quality sensor as examples of the new range’s practical use. They can trigger connected blinds to open or close in response to conditions in the home, with the stated aim of saving energy.
The distinction matters for households that want more than scheduled automation. A fixed timetable can open or close blinds at a set time, while these routines are described as responding to measured temperature, humidity or air-quality conditions. The announcement does not establish a universal energy saving figure, but it does identify a concrete use for combining IKEA sensors with connected blinds.
Galaxy users can also use the sensors in the Sleep Environment Report. SmartThings says the report can provide recommendations based on temperature, humidity and CO2 levels in the home and bedroom. This connects the same household measurements to a view of sleeping conditions, with the data coming from devices installed in the home.
The integration also extends to SmartThings Pet Care and Family Care through IKEA opening, motion and water-leak sensors. These use cases move the range beyond lighting control: the sensors can feed wider household routines and alerts from within SmartThings.
Existing Dirigera installations can remain in place
Households that already use IKEA’s Dirigera hub do not have to replace the entire setup to bring it into SmartThings. SmartThings and IKEA support connecting Dirigera through Matter Bridging, after which IKEA devices linked to the hub can be controlled from the SmartThings app.
The two ecosystems also support Thread credential sharing. The IKEA hub can join the SmartThings Thread network, or the SmartThings hub can join the IKEA network, creating one unified Thread network in the home. That arrangement is the clearest interoperability benefit in the announcement: the systems can share the underlying network while exposing the devices through SmartThings.
Availability remains linked to the CES announcement
SmartThings said the IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices should begin going on sale in early January, with dozens more devices announced for early 2026. Official support for the BILRESA button’s control knob was also scheduled to launch in early 2026.
The announced SmartThings experiences cover Android and iOS apps, Galaxy phones and watches, Samsung TVs and Samsung appliances. For existing SmartThings households, the new range could make IKEA lighting, sensors and controls easier to combine, particularly for blind routines based on home conditions.
The practical limit is compatibility: the experience still depends on a suitable Matter-over-Thread hub or a Dirigera bridge. The rollout timing and the wider device range will determine how far the promised interoperability extends across different homes.
